The Math and Science Academy is designed to provide a technology enhanced environment that changes and motivates its students to become leaders in the fields of math and science. 

Requirements  


To be eligible for admission to the Smith Math and Science Academy. a student must

  • Submit EESMSA application high school transcript (non E. E. Smith students only), and a letter of recommendation from former science and math teachers. 

  • Submit completed applications to E. E. Smith's Guidance Department

  • Pass math and science aptitude test

Rising Freshmen


  • Must have at least an 85 average for eighth grade math/science courses taken.

  • Score at least a 3 on the eight grade Reading and Math End of Grade Test

Program Features


Courses offered Include: Geometry. Probability and Statistics, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science, Biotechnology, AP Chemistry, Meteorology, Astronomy, Zoology, Discrete Math, AP Biology and AP Environmental Science. 

Many academy courses will utilize resources from Fayetteville State University and Fayetteville Technical Community College. Each student will be required to complete an approved research project prior to graduation from the academy.

Goals


  • Academy students will develop proficiency in math/science process skills with the use of technology to promote a practical understanding of those skills. Moreover, academy students will manipulate scientific equipment while participating in advanced laboratory research. 

  • Academy students will participate in specialized science courses to develop a deeper understanding of basic scientific principles and concepts. 

  • Academy students will discover and learn to apply mathematical principles through advanced problem solving. 

  • The Academy, in alignment with the "High Schools That Work Program," will promote the concepts of "school to work" and "career choices."
